The Free Software Foundation (FSF), founded in 1984, is dedicated
to promoting computer users' right to use, study, copy, modify,
and redistribute computer programs. The FSF promotes the
development and use of free software. The FSF also helps to
spread awareness of the ethical and political issues of freedom
in the use of software. Richard Stallman will speak about the
history, purpose, goals, philosophy, methods, status, and future
prospects of the Free Software Movement and the GNU/Linux
Operating System.
Richard Stallman left MIT in 1984 to found the GNU project aimed at
developing a free operating system GNU. This software is used
today by more than 20 million users in its GNU/Linux
variant. Richard Stallman is the principal author of popular free
software such as the GNU C compiler, the GNU symbolic debugger
(GDB) and GNU Emacs.
Richard Stallman is a leading proponent of the Free Software
Movement and is currently the president of the Free Software
Foundation. He is also the author of the GNU GPL (General Public
License), and the GNU Manifesto of the Free software Foundation,
the two most important documents that spearheaded the free
software movement. Richard Stallman's visit to Hyderabad is being
jointly organised by IIIT and the TIE Hyderabad.
